The Ultimate Guide to Popular Thanksgiving Foods

Thanksgiving—it’s not just a holiday; it’s a culinary experience! For many, the highlight of Thanksgiving is gathering around a table laden with delicious food. Whether you’re a seasoned host or new to the holiday, you might wonder which dishes are must-haves and how much food is consumed on this day of gratitude. Let’s explore some of the most popular foods served at Thanksgiving and take a peek at the staggering stats behind this feast.
Turkey: The Star of the Show
Every Thanksgiving table is complete with a perfectly roasted turkey. In fact, according to the National Turkey Federation, approximately 46 million turkeys are eaten each Thanksgiving in the United States alone! It’s the iconic centerpiece that families across the country look forward to. Whether you prefer yours brined, roasted, or even deep-fried, turkey is undeniably the star of Thanksgiving.
Stuffing/Dressing
Stuffing (or dressing, depending on where you’re from) is another staple at the dining table. Made from bread, herbs, and often a mix of vegetables and spices, this dish is designed to complement the turkey. Fun fact—Americans consume around 50 million pounds of stuffing yearly at Thanksgiving!
Mashed Potatoes and Gravy
Creamy and comforting, mashed potatoes topped with rich gravy are a Thanksgiving favorite. It’s estimated that 250 million pounds of potatoes are prepared for this holiday feast. They’re versatile and the perfect canvas for flavors that pair beautifully with turkey and other sides.
Cranberry Sauce
A dish with a bit of tang to balance out the savory flavors, cranberry sauce adds a burst of color and zing to your plate. Whether you make it from fresh cranberries or prefer the classic jellied version from a can, it’s a side dish that families have enjoyed for generations.
Green Bean Casserole
Green bean casserole has become a classic Thanksgiving side since the 1950s. The combination of green beans, creamy mushroom soup, and crispy fried onions on top is a delightful treat that ties together the season’s flavors.
Sweet Potato Casserole
Sweet potato casserole, topped with marshmallows or a crunchy pecan streusel, is a sweet addition many people can’t resist. Its rich flavor and creamy texture make it a standout dish on the Thanksgiving table.
Pumpkin Pie
Finally, the meal concludes with dessert; nothing says Thanksgiving like pumpkin pie. Approximately 50 million pumpkin pies are devoured each Thanksgiving, serving as the perfect sweet ending to a satisfying meal.
